But any retailer — “small, mid or large” — can and should know what they have in stores “at any given time,” making fulfillment or special orders as easy as possible. Today that probably means curbside fulfillment and some kind of eCommerce, even at small retailers

In fact, what robots may do best when it comes to retail is help retail workers do their jobs better, experts told Retail Dive. In retail anyway, says Brett Wickard, founder-president of lean retail platform FieldStack, “technology doesn’t displace people — it amplifies them.”

Using technology in this way is the kind of “lean retail” that companies like FieldStack advocate, so that information can be “de-siloed” and used in discovery — to maximize logistics efficiencies, to discover best-selling (or worst-selling) products, and to allow interactions with customers to have pride of place.

Bull Moose’s founder and President Brett Wickard, a self-described math geek, embraced the concept of lean manufacturing early in the company’s history. Using statistics that projected future orders based on past consumer purchases, he wrote software that assured the 11 Bull Moose stores never ran out of inventory and didn’t order items people weren’t buying. That software and services supporting it evolved into his new company, FieldStack LLC, which he founded in 2013
