The FieldStack Internship Experience: Coding, Culture & Career Growth

When you think of a tech internship, what comes to mind?

Grabbing coffee? Fixing typos? Watching from the sidelines?

That’s not how we do things at FieldStack.

We believe that an internship should be more than a line on your resume – it should be a meaningful step forward in your career. Our interns don’t just sit in the background. They solve real problems. They ship code. And in some cases, they go on to join our team full-time.

So, what’s it really like to intern here? We sat down with two software developers who started as interns – Ashley Drexler and Tristan Cilley – to get the inside scoop. Here’s what they shared.

Real Work, Real Impact

From day one, our interns jump into the same tools and workflows our full-time developers use. Rather than siloed “intern projects,” our team assigns the interns real tickets that contribute to FieldStack’s core platform.

“I was basically working on the same stuff as the rest of the dev team – just at a smaller scale,” Tristan said. “And I’m grateful for that. It gave me a real look at what the job is like day-to-day.”

Ashley agreed: “Working on actual tickets helped me understand the scope of a developer’s responsibilities. It also got me interacting with different parts of the platform and team. It was broad exposure, and it was really valuable.”

Grow with Guidance

We expect our interns to grow during their time with us – and we support them every step of the way.

From regular check-ins to code reviews and team meetings, FieldStack interns are immersed in a learning environment where curiosity is encouraged and collaboration is key.

“I was surprised to be included in the same meetings the full-time devs were in,” Tristan shared. “I figured interns wouldn’t be involved in discussions about dev tools or workflows – but I was, and it made me feel like part of the team.”

And if the work gets tough? You’re not on your own.

“There were definitely times when I got stuck,” Ashley laughed. “But the team was always ready to help – whether that meant jumping on a call or just talking through the problem. That kind of support made a huge difference.”

Launch Your Career

At FieldStack, we don’t just offer internships – we build developers.

Whether or not an intern stays on full-time, our goal is to prepare them for the next step in their career. Interns leave with hands-on experience, a deeper understanding of real-world software development, and the confidence to step into professional dev roles – here or elsewhere.

Ashley and Tristan are two former interns who did go on to join the FieldStack team full-time. But that’s not guaranteed – and it’s not the only definition of success.

“The internship helped me understand what it really means to be a developer – not just from a technical side, but how to work on a team, how to communicate, and how to keep learning,” Ashley said.

“The transition to full-time felt natural because I’d already been doing the work,” Tristan added. “But even if I hadn’t stayed on, I would’ve walked away with a solid foundation and a better sense of what I want from a dev career.”

Our internship is designed to be a launchpad. And wherever your path leads, we want you to feel ready.

Is This the Internship for You?

We’re looking for curious, collaborative learners who want to build things that matter.

You don’t need to be perfect. You don’t need to know everything. But you do need to care – and you do need to be ready to dive in.

“If you’re thinking about applying, do it,” Ashley offered. “Don’t psych yourself out. You’ll learn more than you think, and you’ll probably surprise yourself.”
